Jammers- if you are looking for an underground artist to get behind, you have to check out Northlake. Their latest release “What’s the Sea Like” is right up my alley and gives me major Grizfolk vibes. From Dallas, TX, this talented group has the perfect mix of rock and roll with the usual soft tones of indie artists. I’m going to tell you about their current single they released. :-)
“What’s the Sea Like” was just released on July 16th, and I am all about it. First of all, I love when artists mix in a little whistling. This group does it in a way that is so easy to catch on to the notes early on. Without knowing the words, you can jam to its beat right away. I also love how the lead singer sings in an almost methodic, step-by-step kind of tone. “What’s the sea like / on your little planet / I’m trying to imagine.” It’s so simple and basic, but it works so well. Sometimes, the simpler combinations have the most impact.
Then, I love the chorus because the notes speed up a bit, and the slower sound is suddenly juxtaposed with the heavy drums and guitar, while the lead singer’s voice rises and becomes more powerful. The lyrics are beautiful too: “The days are longer / the nights are cold / and the lights just seem a little bit blank.” You can hear the emotion behind these lyrics when they change from the feeling of wonder, “What’s the sea like,” to the feeling of sadness, “the days are longer.”
The stronger drums and guitar continue through the rest of the song and you can further feel the emotion in the voice as he feels like he is losing the love that he talks about in the beginning. And then, it ends with a powerful line, where everything comes together: the beats match with the words’ endings perfectly with “the dreams that you’ve had.”
This band is definitely on the come-up in the alt/indie world. They have such a relaxed and simple sound, but it’s different from any band I've heard before. Follow their socials and listen to “What’s the Sea Like” on your streaming platforms!!
